Christchurch City Council is seeking Registrations of Interest from individuals, community group and organisations interested in booking space in the new community facility due to open in mid- August 2017.
The two-storey, 1300m2 community facility on the corner of Wakefield Avenue and Nayland Street will include a library, community centre, museum, a shared community office and bookable meeting and activity rooms. The community centre is on the mezzanine floor and will incorporate the community theatre and a commercial kitchen. Spaces available for booking include, on the ground floor: one meeting room (with kitchenette); and on the mezzanine floor: two activity rooms, the large hall, and kitchen. Bookings will be open from approximately one month before opening. The shared community office on the ground floor will house local community groups and will be the new Sumner Hub. A decision is yet to be made about whether the community facility will be Council or community managed. Council is beginning conversations with interested parties. The facility will be Council managed in the interim until this process is finalised and during any transitional period, should it become community managed.
This Registrations of Interest process will assist with scheduling and will allow Council to understand demand, identify any possible conflicts and allow time for negotiation of bookings. Initial Registrations of Interest were sought by Council in November 2014 to understand potential use of the facility and this was used to inform the design of the building.
